HOW TO STOP OVERTHINKING?

How do I stop overthinking? It's a topic close to my heart because I’ve seen how deeply overthinking can damage a leader’s potential. It’s a silent killer of momentum and confidence. I’ve worked with many senior executives who fall into this very trap—caught in endless cycles of doubt, analysis, and hesitation. They know their decisions carry weight—impacting teams, stakeholders, clients, and even their own careers. That kind of pressure can easily trigger overthinking, as leaders strive to find the "perfect" answer that satisfies everyone. It’s a common challenge, but one that must be tackled head-on.

Overthinking often feels like a mental treadmill—you’re moving, but you’re not going anywhere. It can keep you up at night, running through the same thoughts and worst-case scenarios over and over. It’s like redlining a car’s engine with the parking brake on: all smoke, no progress. Most people overthink when they’re facing uncertainty, deeply care about the outcome, or are afraid of making a wrong move. You know you’re overthinking when you're paralyzed by indecision, constantly reworking the same plan, or worrying about unrealistic outcomes. This habit delays action, clouds judgment, and erodes confidence. Leaders who receive feedback about being too slow to act or decide are often caught in this cycle without even realizing it.

So, how do you break free? First, awareness is key. You cannot fix what you don’t acknowledge—so become consciously aware when you’re spiraling into overthinking. Second, treat your thoughts like you do your wardrobe each morning: intentionally choose which thoughts you want to carry into the day. Third, break the pattern physically. Change your state—stand up, take a walk, grab a glass of water, or simply shift your posture. These actions send signals to your brain that it’s time to disrupt the cycle. And most importantly, ask yourself this: What is the cost of overthinking? The truth is, overthinking costs you time, clarity, and the courage to move forward. Don’t let it rob you of your leadership edge.
