HOW TO SUSTAIN RELATIONS AT WORK

How to Sustain Relationships at Work.

Relationships at work are among the most beautiful things you can form. Most of us try hard to build relationships at work, but we often struggle to sustain them long enough. Somewhere in the day-to-day work, these relationships that we’ve built over time—whether through networking, references, or at work—tend to become very transactional. Sustaining relationships is very important, and it can be done in very simple ways. There's no rocket science to it.

  • First - Don't depend on the relationship to make you happy. Our inner state determines our dominant emotional state in the relationship, and not the other way around. So, if you are miserable inside, you won't find someone out there to make you happy, no matter how wonderful they may be. You must make becoming happy on your own a priority, and there are many ways to do that. Only then will you be able to find happiness in a relationship with any person. Even the most difficult person at your work will be easier to deal with when you find happiness within yourself.

  • Second - Don't count favors just because you have referred someone to someone else. You don't need to count how many times you've made that reference. Make sure you invest in the relationship by being a giver.

  • Third - Be understanding. When you have the ability to empathize and show compassion for others, it goes a long way in sustaining your relationships at work.

  • Fourth - Begin to send personalized festival greetings.

  • Fifth - Check in on those relationships often by dropping in a hello or hi.

  • Sixth - Help others deal with their professional problems if you know how.

  • Seventh - Get to know a little bit about their personal lives; that’s where bonding often starts.

  • Eighth - Share your personal and professional life. You have to create that bond.

I encourage you to dedicate regular time and effort to sustain relationships at work, because building a relationship is not the difficult task—sustaining it over a long period of time is what requires regular time, effort, and dedication.
