When will you be successful? If you’re like most people, what comes to mind is someday — somewhere off in the future, success will come to you.
I have heard many people tell me, “I will feel successful when I achieve my goals,” “I will feel successful if I become a director,” or “I will feel successful once I get 25 clients this year.” Most of us have been conditioned to think that success is something that will happen in the future.
At one time, I viewed success as a place I had to arrive. And I felt that things would be beautiful and different once I arrived there. But over time, I realized that this kind of success where you are waiting to reach somewhere is very temporary.
The traditional definitions of success made success appear either as an external element or something you have to pursue or a place to reach.
And after nearly twenty-one years of associating successful people and coaching some of the world’s greatest leaders, this is the definition of success that I now embrace:
Success is within you, and you do not have to wait until you reach a certain age, goal, place, or accomplishment.
You see, this definition shows that success is internal. You carry it with you daily. You maximize your potential, and you help others grow.
I once had an opportunity to talk with Sebi Joseph, President of Otis India.
And during our discussion, I asked him if he felt there was an elevator to success? I admired the simplicity with which Sebi answered this question. He said, “Payal, I would say it’s challenging to figure out one factor to success; irrespective of success and failure, life moves on. Success and failure are mere elevator landings or stops . one should keep going on to enjoy life(the elevator ride). And learn from our failures, but most importantly, we should reinvent ourselves every day, develop a childlike curiosity to have micro innovation, and contribute to family, company, and communities.”
In my interaction with corporate leaders and business owners, I have witnessed how they let external circumstances alter their beliefs about success.
The traditional idea of success is linked to externals: you get this type of success when you make enough cash, secure the right amount of fame, get suitable houses, and receive a big title.
We have conditioned ourselves to believe that achievement is equal to success.
If you carry success, you can achieve whatever you want wherever you are. Your outer success is dependent on your inner success.
None of us know what’s next in our careers. Nor should you worry about it because you are successful within.
I have seen how the top successful people do not chase success because they are sure that they are successful within and can achieve their goals.
What would it feel like to know in your thoughts, heart, mind, and the very depth of your soul that you are born to be successful? To see that success is within you already? To know that no matter what happens with the corporate world, technology, economy, or business environment, you always have a secured future at all times?
When you find that calling that speaks to you, telling you that success of any kind is a journey, not a destination, you will achieve everlasting success.
Don’t waste your career life chasing success externally, which is in abundance within you. Use that success within to manifest the results at your workplace. Activate the success within. Carry success with you wherever you go.
Hope this helps in your journey to success
