LETTING GO

One of the most overlooked traits in leadership is the ability to let go. It reminds me of a powerful story about a man who set out to climb the highest mountain alone, driven by the desire for glory. Despite the darkness, freezing temperatures, and zero visibility, he pressed on. As he climbed, he lost his footing and began to fall. Panic set in as memories of his life flashed before him. Mid-fall, he realized he was tied to a rope and cried out for help. A voice from the clouds responded, “Cut the rope.” Fearful and uncertain, the man refused. The next morning, rescuers found him frozen to death—hanging just six feet above the ground. His refusal to let go cost him his life.
This story is a metaphor for how we often live and lead—clinging tightly to what we think is keeping us safe, when in fact, it’s holding us back. Ask yourself: what ropes are you still tied to? Are they ropes of habits, behaviors, relationships, positions, or titles that no longer serve you? Sometimes, holding on causes more damage than letting go ever could. In my work with successful leaders, one thing stands out clearly: they’ve mastered the art of letting go. They don’t let outdated beliefs, grudges, or comfort zones hold them hostage.
Letting go takes courage. It’s not easy, but it’s powerful. When you release what’s no longer serving you, you create space for growth, creativity, and innovation. You open the door to new possibilities, better relationships, and a clearer vision. Letting go isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s a mark of strength and wisdom. So ask yourself today: what do you need to let go of to rise as the leader you’re meant to be?
