Hello,
There are a lot of theories on why more women don't get into C-Suites and why there is a lack of women in senior leadership roles. However, in my 21 years of coaching and speaking at companies, I can say that most women allow others to decide their career trajectory.
Here’s a fact from my coaching experience: For every ten executives who sign up for coaching with me, I have only two women who sign up. Once a male executive and I have had our pre-coaching discussion, they don't return to their families to ask if they should invest in their growth. They sign up for their coaching sessions if it’s valuable to them in their career.
On the other hand, women tell me they will need to talk this out with their spouse, friend, or family and then get back. And guess what? Ninety-five percent of the time, women don't sign up. They don't take charge of their career. They take permission for their own progress. They ask others and think way too much before investing in their career growth.
The reality is that women are not prioritising their growth. Whether we like it or not, it's a brutal truth of our time. Most women start well on the corporate ladder and are technically skilled. But as they reach the middle of the ladder, they are suddenly afraid of growing. They are fearful of the change and responsibility that will come with growth. They keep thinking of how the family and home would be impacted. These actions and thoughts clearly indicate to the management that the next level is not suitable for you because you don't seem ready to take on it.
My question is simple to both men and women- if you have a dream, if you have a purpose, how can anyone sound you decide what you should do and how much investment must you make to fulfil that dream.
Remember this my friend, your dream and your purpose is birthed inside of you and its given to you to nurture it and grow it. Don’t seek permission for your growth.
Today, we are in a world where every opportunity is equally available for all.
Our corporate world is doing much to help women grow into leadership positions, but it's the women who decline the opportunity.
When women begin to internalise and take small steps to overcome their internal barriers, the corporate world will soon overcome the unseen barrier for women talent.
I hope this helps in your journey towards success.
