Does your boss know what you are best at ?

Last week during a 1:1 coaching session with a senior director, he shared with me a problem he was facing , which made me realize how important it is for me to address it primarily through this blog.

He asked, ‘Payal, my boss gives me all the work, and I get it completed well on time, in fact, before the deadline. But somehow, he never gives me what I am best at cloud computing. Payal. It’s frustrating, and I am considering either bringing this to his attention or looking around for a hop. What would you suggest?’

Well, if you have been in a coaching session with me, you know me well that I do not only suggest or advise. I help you arrive at the right decision so that you can use the technique in the future.

Here’s the first step of my interaction with my client.

I asked him a question in response to his question. ‘Does your boss know what you are the best at? Have you shown him mastery in any one area? My client answered: ‘No, Payal, I haven’t.’

Well, I expected this answer.

It’s a challenge for many senior leaders. They reach a certain level in the organization due to their skills and hard work. And when they are there, they want to grow and be visible.

What they don’t know is that the visibility will come based on something other than your skills and hard work.

You might have a list of career accomplishments. But if you’re the only one with access to that list — and no one else understands the extent of your contributions or their impact on the organization — you’ll be passed on when the promotions are announced.

Know that the decisions about you are being made in boardrooms when you are not around.

You have to build what I call ‘Leadership Brand.’ It’s a process, and anyone who has got coached by me knows the importance of this step and why I spend time on it.

To begin the leadership branding process, think about this question: What are you a master at in your field of work?

This question can help you understand yourself better and then you can build on this mastery so it’s visible to your boss, your colleagues, your external stakeholders and your teams.
